George Soros hasn’t been much of a political giver since 2004. That was the year he donated millions in an effort to get George W. Bush out of office. As we all know, it didn’t work and Bush remained in office for another four years.
The good news on politico.com however is Soros has had a change of heart. In December of 2015 Soros donated $6 million to a super PAC that was supporting Hillary Clinton’s presidential run. In total Soros donated $8 million in 2015 to groups supporting Clinton.
Priorities USA Action was the super PAC that received the $6 million dollar check from Soros. According to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission, Priorities USA Action raised $25 million in the second half of 2015. Heading into 2016 the PAC had $36 million in the bank.
Soros wasn’t the only major donor to contribute to Priorities USA Action. Other moguls such as Haim Saban and his wife Cheryl, Herb Sandler and Donald Sussman all donated over a million to the PAC. Working for Working Americans, a union-affiliated super PAC, also donated over a million to the cause.
And while all of these donations are significant, none of them matter as much as the ones from Soros.
In the circle of wealthy democrats, Soros is looked at as a bellwether. He is the type of guy who will gladly drop eight figures to support the candidate of his choice. Since 2004 Soros has donated very little to various political groups. In 2012, even after an intense courtship, Soros only donated $1 million to Priorities USA.
At the time Priorities USA was supporting the reelection of President Barack Obama. That same year Soros told a close Clinton ally how much he regretted not supporting Hillary in the 2008 primaries. He also praised Clinton for always having an open door and being willing to listen when it came to policy discussions.
This information came to light when Hillary Clinton’s emails were made public by the State Department in late 2015.
As 2015 came to a close, Priorities USA was just one of the many super PACs who were working diligently to get Soros to donate with them. The fact he wrote such a huge check says a lot. Its a sign to other wealthy democrats that now is the time to get on board and donate.
Especially when you consider conservative billionaires are expected to donate well over $1 billion dollars to various money groups and super PACs.
